Localized Antibiotic Application
Procedure Description
Localized antibiotic application is a targeted treatment for periodontal (gum) disease that delivers medication directly to infected gum pockets. At Prime Dental Group, we typically use Arestin (minocycline microspheres) immediately following scaling and root planing procedures. The antibiotic is placed directly into the periodontal pocket using a small applicator, where it releases medication over time to eliminate bacteria that cause gum disease. The treatment is quick, painless, and requires no additional appointments—it's applied right after your deep cleaning while the pocket is accessible.
Indications
Localized antibiotic therapy is recommended as an adjunct to scaling and root planing for patients with moderate to severe periodontal disease. Ideal candidates include:
When to Consider Localized Antibiotic Application
Persistent Periodontal Pockets
Patients with pocket depths of 5mm or greater after initial therapy.
Localized Infection Sites
Specific teeth or areas that show continued inflammation or bleeding.
Chronic Periodontitis
Ongoing gum disease that hasn't fully responded to mechanical cleaning alone.
High-Risk Patients
Those with systemic conditions like diabetes that affect healing and infection control.
Note: Localized antibiotics are not a substitute for scaling and root planing—they work together to maximize treatment effectiveness.
Benefits
Why Choose Localized Antibiotic Application?
Targeted Treatment
Medication is delivered directly to the infection site for maximum effectiveness.
Sustained Release
Antibiotics release gradually over 14-21 days for prolonged bacterial elimination.
Reduced Pocket Depths
Studies show improved pocket reduction when combined with scaling and root planing.
Minimal Side Effects
Localized delivery means less systemic absorption compared to oral antibiotics.
Treatment Alternatives
Scaling and Root Planing Alone
Mechanical cleaning may be sufficient for mild to moderate gum disease.
Systemic Antibiotics
Oral antibiotics may be prescribed for widespread or aggressive periodontitis.
Periodontal Surgery
For advanced cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to access deep pockets.
