Preventive Care

Fluoride Treatment

Procedure Description

Professional fluoride treatments are one of the most effective and underutilized preventive measures in dentistry. During the treatment, Dr. Ovsepyan or his associate dentists apply a highly concentrated fluoride solution directly to your teeth using a gel, foam, or varnish. The procedure takes just a few minutes and is completely painless. First, the teeth are cleaned and dried, then the fluoride is applied using a tray, brush, or swab depending on the delivery method. Fluoride varnish, the most common form used today, is painted directly onto the tooth surfaces and hardens on contact with saliva. Patients are typically advised not to eat or drink for 30 minutes after treatment to allow maximum fluoride absorption. The entire process takes about 5-10 minutes and can be done during a regular dental visit.

Indications

Professional fluoride treatments are recommended for patients who need extra protection against tooth decay:

When to Consider Fluoride Treatment

Children and Adolescents

As permanent teeth develop, fluoride strengthens enamel during critical growth periods. Children ages 6 months to 16 years benefit most from regular fluoride treatments.

High Cavity Risk

Adults with a history of frequent cavities, poor oral hygiene, or diets high in sugar and carbohydrates need additional fluoride protection.

Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

Patients with reduced saliva flow from medications, medical conditions, or radiation therapy lack natural cavity protection and benefit greatly from fluoride.

Gum Recession

Exposed root surfaces are more vulnerable to decay than enamel. Fluoride helps protect these sensitive areas.

Orthodontic Patients

Braces and other appliances create areas difficult to clean, increasing cavity risk. Fluoride provides added protection during orthodontic treatment.

Note: While fluoride toothpaste provides daily protection, professional fluoride treatments deliver a much higher concentration that provides longer-lasting cavity prevention.

Benefits

Why Choose Fluoride Treatment?

Strengthens Tooth Enamel

Fluoride integrates into the tooth structure, making enamel more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and acidic foods.

Remineralizes Weakened Teeth

Fluoride can actually reverse early-stage cavities by attracting minerals like calcium and phosphate back into demineralized enamel.

Reduces Cavity Risk

Studies show professional fluoride treatments reduce cavity rates by 30-40% in high-risk patients.

Quick and Painless

The entire treatment takes just 5-10 minutes with no discomfort, injections, or drilling.

Cost-Effective Prevention

Fluoride treatments are far less expensive than treating cavities with fillings, crowns, or root canals.

Safe and Proven

Fluoride has been used safely in dentistry for over 70 years and is endorsed by every major dental and medical organization.

Alternatives

Dental Sealants

Physically block grooves and pits from decay but don't strengthen enamel. Best used in combination with fluoride for maximum protection.

Fluoride Toothpaste Only

Provides daily low-dose fluoride but much less effective than professional treatments for high-risk patients.

Prescription Fluoride Rinse

Stronger than over-the-counter products but still less concentrated than in-office professional treatments.

Dietary Changes

Reducing sugar intake helps but doesn't provide the enamel-strengthening benefits of fluoride.
